As of recently, the Japanese company Zaurus has made the shipping of electronic devices legally available to people in Japan. This means that electronics can how be shipped to Shinjuku City in Tokyo where the Intimus FlashEx media shredder will ensure the safe destruction of the devices for metal recycling and reuse.
Each mobile phone and each 'gara-kei' (see previous blog post) costs 1,280 yen, and each tablet costs 2,280 yen to ship, excluding the cost of shipping. Submitting more than 2 items introduces discounts based on the number of additional items.
More information about the shipping services can be found on the official Zaurus website.
My mother is willing to create submit an application for the transport on my behalf as legally underage individuals cannot submit themselves, allowing me to safely and reliably recycle the old phones that I myself had from where I am based in Hokkaido.
I will use my own finances to fund this process, and I will contribute my grandfather's old phone and my grandmother's two tablets.
I hope this development in Japanese electronic recycling accessibility will be useful for anyone living in Japan who may have their own old electronics.
